BRAZILIAN HYGIENE: THE LESSONS OF BELISÁRIO PENNA FOR THE NORMAL SCHOOLS

Abstract

Brazilian Hygiene, written by the sanitary doctor Belisário Penna, should be a publication for the teachers of the normal schools of São Paulo. Commissioned by Governor Washington Luis, the book would address lessons in biology and public health, linked to hygiene and sanitation. However, Brazilian Hygiene has never been published. The outline of the unpublished book is found in the Belisário Penna Personal Fund, under the custody of the Archive and Documentation Department of the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz. Thus, I try to investigate this source and relate its content to the concerns of the Brazilian sanitarian when writing a work directed to normal schools. The article notes how themes related to Penna's trajectory such as sanitation, alcoholism, education, politics and public health were part of the book's discussion.
