“CRUELTY WITHOUT EXAMPLE:” DISCLOSING NEW SOURCES ON A PRODIGIOUS CASE OF INFANTICIDE THAT WAS PUBLISHED IN 18TH CENTURY PORTUGAL

Abstract

We present a document that made public a four-page printout reporting an infanticide in a Spanish Kingdom village in 1728. The source material was printed in Lisbon in 1732, at Pedro Ferreira’s typography, with all necessary licenses and royal acknowledgment. The original document is kept at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (BNP), and is available for local consult. We also reflect on possible uses and interests regarding the research source, and analyze the possible symbolic dispositions that perceive adult’s social feeling towards childhood, in a modern context of living changes in the Christian realm during the Old Iberian regime.
