“Mom, Maria never existed! Can you call me João?” Reflexions on the experiences of transgender children with family relations and medicalization

Abstract

This is an analysis of the experiences of families with children who have identity conflicts with gender rules, looking specifically to one ethnographic case concerning a middleclass family from Pernambuco that undergoes a process of medicalization through a diagnostic of Gender Dysphoria in Children. The objective is to understand the social and cultural conditions in which medical and psychological explanations and practices become an alternative to reorganize family relations around the conflict experienced by the child. I explore the dimension of family and childhood values mobilized in the dilemmas and conflicts experienced by the interlocutors, as well as the practices of family and medical control of children and experiences of gender identification that conflict with the social norms.
