Confronting the present: the democratic crisis from the MST’s Human Rights sector

Abstract

In this ethnographic essay, I seek to perspective the Brazilian democratic crises from the daily life of the lawyers and popular legal advisors group that integrate the MST’s Human Rights sector in Pernambuco, to which I belong and whose performance takes place in political contexts intensely and historically marked by violence and criminalization. To do so, I take as a starting point two events I heard about on April 24, 2021: the arrest of a sound car driver accused of harming the Republic President honor and committing a crime under the National Security Law; and the persecutions and death threats against a landless person involved in agrarian conflicts in the Pernambuco south forest. With this, I intend to discern the Bolsonarism resonances in these cases, the State constraints engendered in them and our democratic experience contradictions, which updates past images at the same time that demands confrontation with its present.
