The article addresses the cultural diversity among students of music taking courses at the Instituto Villa-Lobos (University of Rio de Janeiro music school). It attempts to describe the musical repertoires chosen by the students and to correlate them with the choice of music courses and professional experiences. Special attention is given to the students’ campaigning for the popular music.
