Organizational structure and work teams: a study of organizational changes in four major companies

This paper reports on a research carried out at four large manufacturers regarding changes in their organizational structures and the formation of work teams. The structural changes that have been wrought in these organizations are complex and understanding their depth and scope requires much effort and detailed analysis. Upon completion, the research revealed that work teams have a been vital factor in the design of the new organizational structure of the 90s, particularly insofar as the issue of production flexibility is concerned. This report also discusses other significant aspects uncovered by the research that significantly affect successful organizational changes, such as organizational culture, layout and the attitude of management.
