Index of Local Sustainable Development and its influences in public politics: an exploratory study of the municipal politics of Alagoa Grande

The issues related to the changes and problems of the local and regional development have acquired greater relevance in institutional spaces including the fields of science and research as a result of instability and problems arising from the relationship between production and consumption. In this context, it is necessary to redefine public policy and social actors' activities involved with the initiatives for the generation of local and sustainable development. This study aims to identify the Index of Sustainable Development of the city of Alagoa Grande and its influence in formulating and implementing policies for municipal development. Therefore, the methodology developed by Martins and Cândido (2008), which measures the rate of sustainability of cities, was used focusing on identifying the situation of the municipality of the city under study in relation to sustainability. The results indicated that the sustainability indexes found are not satisfactory in all areas investigated, which brings the need to redesign public policies and promote social and institutional attitude changes in order to achieve greater synergy between public and private interests towards the generation of sustainable development.
