Neoliberal restructuring in central areas in Latin American port cities: the case of Valparaíso (Chile)

Abstract

The restructuring of central areas is an expression of the reproduction of neoliberal policies in cities. Recently, in the commune of Valparaíso (Chile) has undergone transformations in its central area and coastline. Therefore, this article seeks to analyze the neoliberal restructuring of the central area of Valparaíso since the 2000s. The methodology used to achieve the stated objective has three main parts: (1) Bibliographical analysis; (2) Interviews with key informants and (3) Participant observation. The results indicate that the changes generated in Valparaíso are related to the tertiary sector, increasing informal work. In addition, the restructuring of the city is also related to the interests of recovering public spaces and promoting tourist activities.
