Hydrogeomorphological assessment: an historical approach in the 20th and 21st centuries

Abstract

The Duas Bocas River Watershed (BHRDB) has undergone landscape changes over time and, as a result, this work aims to evaluate its hydrogeomorphological quality between the 20th and 21st centuries. The BHRDB is located on the Grande Vitória Metropolitan Region, in the Espírito Santo state. To carry out this work aerial photographs from the 20th century was used, with 1 m spatial resolution, and ortophotos from 21st century, with 0.5 m spatial resolution. To classify the BHRDB main river 5 sectors were established with 5.66 km long. The results show, in general, a deterioration in the hydrogeomorphological quality of the Duas Bocas river between the 20th and 21st centuries, except for the sector 1, which improved its quality and had the best quality over the two centuries evaluated. Given the hydro-geomorphological deterioration of the other sectors, it is recommended to promote reforestations of the riparian corridor and the river restoration to improve the hydrogeomorphological quality of the river.
