Click farm platforms: working conditions, materialities and forms of organization

Abstract

This paper analyses click farm platforms as an element of contribution to the deepening of platformization of labour in Brazil. Based on interviews with workers and observations of platforms, WhatsApp and Facebook groups, and videos on YouTube, the investigation highlights working conditions, materialities and forms of organization of people who are paid to like, comment, and follow accounts on social media platforms. Click farms act as parasite platforms in relation to social media infrastructures. The profile of those who work for the platforms is that of woman, with history of informal work. There are parallel markets for selling and buying fake accounts and bots, which are part of the tactics of these workers to survive in the context of click farms.
