“This program includes negative representations”: diversity and difference in SparkShorts from Disney+

Abstract

This paper analyzes how Disney+ channel employs the value of diversity to build its most contemporary narratives, especially in Pixar's SparkShorts short film series. As we discussed, the initiative renegotiates Disney's past, marked by criticism of stereotyped representations of cultures and social groups, approaching the agendas of the LGBTQIA+ movements, people with disabilities, black people and women. Based on the notion of difference, we seek to demonstrate that the series, while enabling new narratives based on the experiences of its directors, also stands itself as a space for the affirmation and construction of Disney as a brand.
