Attachment in couples with a child with Autism

The premises of the attachment theory state that a person`s attachment is related to the quality of their romantic relations and that it tends to be reactivated in stressful situations. Based on this, this study has investigated the relations between the individual attachment and the joint attachment in couples, in three couples whose child presents autism. The individual attachment script was assessed through the Attachment Script Assessment and the couple's attachment through a semi-structured interview. The main results showed that in couples in which one or both individuals have access to the secure attachment script, the relation as parental partners was more preserved, which didn´t happen when the couples didn´t present these indicators.
