Forest fragmentation of Serra da Concórdia, Paraíba river valley - Rio de Janeiro State: characterization as a subsidy to preserve the Atlantic Forest

Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the state of the fragmentation in the mountain of Concórdia, located in the municipal districts of Valença and Barra do Piraí - RJ using different techniques of GIS and Remote Sensing. For that the amount of fragments, its size, the connectivity between the fragments and its shape were analyzed. The shape was evaluated through the relation: a) area of interior/area of border and b) area/perimeter, through the dimension fractal “d”. Forest fragments were considered those with vegetation in the medium and advanced stage of regeneration. In the period 1985 to 2004 there was an increase of about 200 ha of coverage with secondary forest. There are 72 forest fragments of which 56 have less than 10 ha area. The distance between them is small, which facilitates the dispersal of propagules and individuals. However, the border of the fragments are quite irregular, which makes environmentally vulnerable.
