Epidemiological studies and chemical control of Phakopsora euvitis

In January of 2003 typical symptoms of rust were verified on leaves of grape vine (Vitis vinifera), in the experimental areas of the Universidade Estadual Paulista, campus of Ilha Solteira, in Selvíria, Mato Grosso do Sul and Ilha Solteira, São Paulo State, Brazil. This is the first report of this vine disease in Central-Western Brazil. Considering the intensity of the disease, the importance of the vine in the area and the lack of information on vine rust, the objectives of this work were to ratify the pathogenicity of Phakopsora euvitis, to verify the influence of light and temperature on the fungus urediniospore germination; to determine the in vivo longevity of urediniospores and to assess the efficacy of fungicides to control the rust. Rust symptoms were verified only on mature grape leaves. A temperature of 25 ºC and darkness were the best conditions for germination of P. euvitis uredinospores on the inferior surface of the grape leaf. On infected grape leaves clipped from plants and kept seven days on the soil surface, the urediniospore germination was reduced by 94%. In two experiments eight fungicides were tested, where propiconazol, tebuconazol and azoxystrobin resulted in the lowest disease intensities. Tebuconazol provided the smallest rust intensity. In general, greater rust intensity was observed in the vine carried in the horizontal cordon system.
