Stress and university teaching in the health sector

The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical manifestations of stress and stress factors in health department lecturers at a public university in Northern Brazil. The following instruments were used: Lipp's Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults and a Questionnaire on the self-perception of stress. It was found that 24.2% of participants had clinical signs of stress and that 95.4% were in the resistance stage. As regards the symptoms of stress, it was found that 63.6% had physical symptoms while 36.4% presented psychological symptoms. As for the self-perception of stress, stress at work and working conditions, the teaching staff evaluated themselves as highly stressed. The results related to clinical manifestations of stress were associated with teaching staff with children (p=0.005), who perceive themselves as highly stressed (p<0.05). Thus, there is a need for care and attention for this population of university lecturers who appear to be facing some difficulties in the workplace.
