Management of chemical toilet effluents: a review of international approaches and a case study from Minas Gerais

ABSTRACT

Chemical toilets (CT) are a solution widely used as an alternative to sanitary sewage in places where there is no access to the sewage collection network, mainly applied in public events and mobile work fronts. I is common to add deodorizing substances in CT to inhibit the microbiological activity of the environment and minimize bad odors generated by microbial action. The deodorants applied contain surfactants, aromatic essences, and dyes, in addition to active compounds used to inhibit microbiological activity, such as formaldehyde, a carcinogenic compound. The management of CT effluents (CTE) in Brazil is still incipient, with reports of clandestine disposal in rivers and drainage systems, bringing consequences to public health and the environment. There are few studies on the characterization of CTE and the possible impacts generated in conventional Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) that carry out the reception of this waste. For these reasons, this study evaluated the management, transportation and final destination of CTE, the deodorants used and Brazilian and Minas Gerais regulations. In addition, it presented a scenario for discussion, through the use of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, such as the application of structured and semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The results obtained in this study indicate that there is no consensus on the management practices for CTEs, impacting their regulation at state levels, especially national ones. Therefore, it is observed that there must be an improvement in the environmental control of the sector, especially with regard to the regulation of material receiving services by the SPTs.
