Analysis of management of waste of health services (WHS) in the Emergency Hospital of Macapá, Amapá, Brazil

ABSTRACT

In the State of Amapá, located in the northern region of Brazil, the lack of information on the waste of health services (WHS) precludes an assessment of management, especially its handling, which presents problems in all stages, from generation to final disposal. This research aimed at generating information about the WHS in the emergency department of a state hospital: Emergency Hospital, located in the capital Macapá. The case study aimed at examining the intra-unit management of WSS with supporting instruments (questionnaires, forms and gravimetric study) and techniques (observation, interviews, document and literature search). The results indicate the generation rate of 5.273 kg WHS/bed/day, and the Burn Treatment Center (BTC) was the sector with the highest generation rate: 5.990 kg. bed-1.day-1. Regarding the composition, 35.01% of WHS are groups A, B and E, but when segregated gravimetrically, the percentage of these residues falls to 25%. Segregation of WHS is deficient, since it showed mixture of up to 79,6% of common residues (group D) packaged as infectious waste (group A) and 15.5% of them packed as ordinary waste. The failure to implement the Plan for Waste Management of Health Services (PWMHS) in the Hospital, translated in the absence of positive management attitudes and continued education, plus the ineffectiveness of the supervisory agencies are the causes of this scenario.
