Integration of physical chemistry and advanced oxidative processes for remediation of landfill leachate

In this work, we propose the integration of processes for remediation of landfill leachate, where humic substances are preliminary precipited and separated in acidic conditions and an advanced oxidative process further treats the soluble fraction. Typically, the precipitation of humic substances reduces 14% of the COD content and a great part of the intrinsic color, fact that significantly improves the efficiency of the photochemical treatment. When applied as a successive H2O2 additions system the UV/H2O2 process induce color and COD reductions of 95 and 75% respectively, in reaction times of 120 min. This results are very promissory, principally because the recalcitrant character of the leachate matrix.
