This study presents the evolution and persistent inequalities of Brazilians' educational attainment. Educational inequality is one of the main problems that allow the maintenance of the abysmal social disparities faced by the Brazilian population. Analysis has shown that: schooling accumulation rate is still rather low; despite illiteracy rate reduction, a large absolute number of illiterates still exist; despite the increase of general coverage, nursery school (0-6 years old) and secondary school access are still wanting; and primary, secondary and higher education present very unequal patterns of participation and performance. Regarding inequality, this paper reveals that inhabitants of the northeastern region and the poorest deciles have the worst indicators throughout the time span analyzed.
