AFFIRMATIVE POLICIES IN APPLICATION SCHOOLS IN BRAZIL: AN OPEN TOPIC

ABSTRACT

This article discusses the importance of implementing affirmative policies in the modality of reservation of places for afro-descendant students in elementary education at Application Schools linked to Brazilian federal universities. The reflections are the result of data collected in two surveys that examined the school admission notices. It was identified that only the institution linked to the Federal University of Maranhão implemented the reservation of places with an ethnic-racial perspective in the period examined (2003–2018). The results also point to the need of improvement in affirmative action policies for students with disabilities, and indicate the urgency of strengthening the democratization of access to black students who historically have less representation in federal institutions.
