This article reflects on the various dimensions of professional competence. Analysing the changes in the productin system, market and work organisation as well as lifecycle, it shows the redefinition of paid jobs and their relationship with global transformation. It also argues that the alternative between flexibility and specialization is a false one, being vital to redefine professional training in terms of research, experience and negotiation between social actors.
