The Pedagogy Undergraduate Training in UFMG’s Faculty of Education: a glance based on perceptions from teachers and former students

ABSTRACT

This paper, derived from the PhD Thesis defended in 2016 in the Faculty of Education (FaE) from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), presents some reflections on the Pedagogy undergraduate training offered by the institution in the on-site attendance modality. This analysis is conducted starting with the presentation of a brief history of curriculum reforms implemented by the institution especially focusing on the reform carried out after the approval of the National Curricular Guideline for Pedagogy (DCNP). To deepen the analysis, interviews held with teachers that participated in the reform are commented. Additionally, it introduces data collected via surveys applied to former students of the institution from 2000 to 2011. The participants informed their perceptions on the training obtained during their undergraduate training in Pedagogy in UFMG complementing with aspects related to their professional insertion. The results showed that the school remains the main sector of activity and that teaching, especially in elementary school, is prevalent, despite the emergence of other areas and activities, especially for long distance learning and higher education. The graduates consider, in general, that the course provides solid theoretical formation, although they demand a better connection between theory and practice and suggest the inclusion of content designed for the NICT in curriculum. The satisfaction with the activity performed is harmonized with the perception of social devaluation of Pedagogy and the pedagogues.
