Eletrocatalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction on graphite electrodes modified with iron tetracarboxyphthalocyanine

This work presents a study of the electrochemical properties of pyrolytic graphite electrodes modified, at monolayer levels, with iron tetracarboxylated phthalocyanine, FeTcPc, in aqueous solutions. In alkaline media, the modified electrodes presented high electrocatalytic activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction, and comparable to that showed by platinum electrodes. The reaction proceeds according to a first order reaction with respect to dissolved oxygen, a mechanism involving 4 electrons and associated with the Fe(3+)TcPc/Fe(2+)TcPc redox process.
