THE PROBLEM-SOLVING METHODOLOGY IN SCIENCE TEACHING: THE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE PROBLEM

ABSTRACT: In the literature, we find some classifications for the problems statements, but there are few discussions on how to elaborate good problems to be used based on the Problem-Solving methodology. In this sense, the aim of this study is to present the fundamental characteristics of an Effective Problem for Science Teaching. Based on the investigations carried out over the last decade, we propose that an Effective Problem should contextualize the theme to students’ reality, raise critical reflection on the addressed subject, motivate the student and make the proposition susceptible to be researched. Our intention with this article is to offer subsides to teachers in the elaboration and use of investigative problems in their classes.
