The curious history of the Real Collegio dos Nobres

Abstract

What have we learned by examining a college to prepare the Portuguese nobility in the period of the Marquis of Pombal? At present, it would be unacceptable to use public funds to finance a college restricted to the nobility. Equally unacceptable would be to punish indiscipline with jail sentences. Or even, to accept that some book s were forbidden. In contrast, public schools could charge students. The rectors and their staff were required to have culture and moral qualities. The study regime was very strict. Teachers had to explain the pedagogy used in class and always lead students to apply what they taught in practice.
