abstract
This article discusses Marcelino Freire’s short story “Irmãos”, taking into account the conceptualization of the subject's visibility construed by television and the figure concept, found in discursive semiotics. To accomplish this purpose, the article focuses on the opposition between the protagonist of Freire's short story, a writer, and his double, a televangelist, considering the contrast between the profane and the sacred. The analysis of characters, supported by the findings regarding a specific type of show business, made apparent here in television’s broadcasting power, demonstrates the pertinence of our proposal, confirming the validity of an ambiguous discourse which underlies the analyzed text.
