The Christ’s Social Kingdom and the Nation’s Organic Constitution: from Leo XIII's encyclicals to the Brazilian Catholic thought of the early thirties

ABSTRACT

The article talks about the Catholic Church’s strategy and doctrine to build Christ’s Social Kingdom during the pontificates of Leon XIII and Pius XI. The aim is to offer a political context for Alceu Amoroso Lima’s arguments in favor of a Nation’s Organic Constitution, the project that guided Brazilian Catholics’ demands in the 1933-4 Constituent Assembly. The research used bibliographical and documental sources, in addition to a contextual and conceptual analysis of the material researched.
