"The bird and the shadow": the use of slave rebellions by political parties in the province of São Paulo in the last decades of slavery

This article focuses on slave rebellions as social movements occurred in the province of São Paulo during the last decades of slavery in Brazil, comparing historical interpretations to primary sources. It shows how the opposition party used those uprisings to attack the government party through the newspapers, condemning it for fighting those movements in order to satisfy the interests of its own supporters.
