Newspaper founders and party leaders: strategic assets for oligarchic competition in the biography of Brazilian senators

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the distribution of two roles in the biography of Brazilian senators during the first republic: newspaper founder and party leader. We hypothesize that the individuals who accumulated both roles were in a position to control their own networks of influence, and, for this reason, determined parameters for oligarchic competition, in such a way that their biographies can be understood as the origin of Brazilian political parties in the republican period. These findings were obtained from a prosopographical study of all individuals who took office in the Federal Senate between 1890 and 1934.
