Urbanistic plans, popular markets and heritage processes in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

Several food markets, seen as "unsanitary" sites that could undermine the cities' development, have been removed to urban outskirts. At present, the food markets are being reframed as "heritage sites" that express alternative urbanistic conceptions, and thus become object of public policies directed to tourism. This paper analyzes some urbanistic plans for the reconstruction of a market in the center of Rio de Janeiro. It exposes different urban conceptions related to Rio de Janeiro's marketplaces, as well as connections between urban planning and heritage processes.
