Are we recognizing or building an ethnically-based polarity?challenges to the teaching of history after Law nº 10.639

This paper proposes reflections on the challenges faced by teachers after the Law 10.639/03 introduced the teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African history and culture, and of ethnic and race relations, in elementary education in Brazil. While discussing presumptions and paradoxes in the text of the law, it identifies its impacts, its challenges and its theoretical and practical consequences in history teaching.
