"Who is more useful to the country: the one that plants or the one that remains in the city and just eats?": the peasants of the state of Rio de Janeiro and their struggles for land expropriation (1962-1963)

Abstract

This article analyses the ways in which a group of peasants faced the constant threats of eviction between the years of 1962 and 63. The lands in question, located in Magé, were occupied by squatters and were being claimed as its property by the Companhia América Fabril, which owned two textile units nearby. Thus, we intend to identify the main demands and proposals of these workers, who acquired greater visibility after the impact of the marches they held in Niteroi, then capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
