Dynamics of labor productivity growth in the Brazilian manufacturing industry by size – 1997 to 2018

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the dynamics of productivity evolution of the Brazilian manufacturing industry considering the size ranges of companies. For the analysis, data from the Annual Industrial Survey was used, through a special tabulation. A long horizon of time was used, from 1997 to 2018, and the shift-share method was used to decompose the growth of industrial labor productivity in the Brazilian industry, focusing on the size of the companies, both between sizes and intra-sizes. The results showed that small companies performed a better dynamic of structural change, both among other sizes and internally. Thus, there was a sign of improvement in productive performance in smaller sizes, that is, the results indicate a decrease, although subtle, in the productive gap on the part of small and medium-sized companies.
