The environmental Kuznets curve in household solid waste production in Brazilian municipalities, 2011-2015

Abstract

This work tests the existence of the Kuznets Environmental Curve (CKA) in the relationship between GDP per capita and solid waste generation in Brazilian municipalities. Panel data models were estimated for the period from 2011 to 2015. The results confirmed the CKA hypothesis for the production of solid household waste in the country’s municipalities. In relation to the other variables, it was observed that the charge for the provision of the service and selective collection tend to cause a decrease in solid waste generation per capita. Using the municipalities of the Northeast region as a reference, it was observed that the production of solid waste is lower in the municipalities of the Southeast and Southern regions. For the municipalities of the Northern and Central-West regions, the differences were not significant.
