Determinants of productive work in Brazil: gender norms and household decisions

Abstract

Even in the middle of the 21st century, representation of women in work is still far behind that of men, despite the educational advances made by women. Given this scenario, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the determinants and their relative importance in the decision to be economically active, considering men and women in nuclear household units, with an emphasis on understanding gender norms. For this, the bivariate Probit model is used to estimate the joint decision of men and women to participate in the labor market, based on the 2018 Continuous PNAD. The findings indicate that the decision made by men and women, from nuclear families, to enter the labor market is interdependent, corroborating the choice of the bivariate probability model. Moreover, it appears that the productive attributes favor the work performance of men and women, but the variables related to gender norms, in general, move in the opposite direction.
