Factors associated with poisoning in children

Study aimed at analyzing the risk factors associated with poisoning in children. The cases recorded at the Regional University Hospital of Maringa's Poisoning Control Center were used for the analysis. Exploratory study, with search of records of poisoning in children attended in 2008. The results showed factors associated with poisoning among male children, and aged between zero and four years. As a predisposing factor: the residence of the adult whose presence at the time of the accident did not prevent the intoxication. Among the triggering factors, the facilitated access to medicines and oral exposure. Considering the poisoning among children as a preventable injury, the focus is on prevention, with guidelines on packaging of toxic agents, surveillance of families with awareness of the risks of the home environment. As well as state support, with implementation of child protective packaging with tamper evident and availability of fractionated doses to extinguish the "home pharmacy".
