Research that aimed to unveil the perceptions of the puerpera about breastfeeding in front of the process of transition to the maternal role. The methodology is qualitative using the research-care method through the nursing consultation. The study was conducted at the clinic of a Public Parenting of Curitiba. To understand the meaning of the testimonies we chose thematic analysis of content. After the analysis of the speeches of 19 puerperas, 3 units of context and 12 units of record have emerged. Considering the importance of breastfeeding in the experience of the transition to the maternal role, we present the analysis of the Registration Unit eleven, "the confrontation of breastfeeding." We conclude that the understanding of the meaning and how women experience the breastfeeding may help the nursing care to exceed the technical dimension, becoming humanized and individualized.
