The contribution of the companion to the humanization of delivery and birth: perceptions of puerperal women

Objective:

Investigating the contribution of a companion during delivery and birth, under the perspective of puerperal women.

Methods:

This is a qualitative and descriptive study, performed in a public hospital of secondary level in the city of Fortaleza, Ceará State, with 20 puerperal women. The data collection took place between May and June 2012, through recorded semi-structured interviews. The speeches were organized and analyzed based on the content analysis of Bardin.

Results:

The presence of a companion promotes confidence and sureness at the moment of delivery, in addition to being a source of support and strength, capable of softening the pain, the sensation of loneliness and generating emotional and physical welfare.

Conclusion:

The care provided by companions has contributed to the humanization of delivery and birth and also brought comfort, calmness and safety, thus relieving the tension of the parturient women.
