ABSTRACT

This article outlines the relevance of Artur Azevedo’s involvement in the struggle against slavery in Brazil. In the 1880’s, as the abolitionist campaign was unleashed, he wrote a comedy and a drama condemning slavery; then, in the “revistas de ano” (a type of comic play with musical sketches), he satirized the slaveowners and denounced their crimes against slaves. As a journalist, Artur Azevedo was also committed to the abolitionist cause.
