Seeing with Words

ABSTRACT

This article is a product of activities and projects, developed by the authors in Brazil and France, that are centered on questions that refer to the different forms of dialogue found in verbal, visual and/or verbal-visual dimensions. It aims to observe, in the verbal fabric woven by an utterer, the utterative-discursive viewpoint, the lexical choices, the syntactic organization that, when completing the utterance, does so to provoke in the one who reads/listens the sensation of seeing. For this reason, the verbal segments that comprise our corpus of analysis were chosen, delimited, and organized, using the criterion of linguistic, utterative and discursive processes, which imply, in their own existence and production, an addressee, an interlocutor who is not only the reader/listener, but also - and inevitably - the observer, spectator. This occurs as a result of the verbal force that provokes visual images. The theoretical and methodological framework on which this study is based is the dialogical perspective, grounded in the works of Bakhtin and the Circle. Elements from other perspectives are included as we take into consideration that constitutively intersemiotic utterances demand an interdisciplinary approach. With this reflection we aim to contribute to making explicit the force of the verbal dimension to the imaginary and the different spheres of human activity in a dominantly visual society.
