From war to festival: analysis of metaphors from 2018 Soccer World Cup coverage in Marca and Sovetsky Sport

ABSTRACT

In this article, metaphors from news texts, chronicles, and reports dedicated to the 2018 Soccer World Cup from two sports newspapers published in two different countries in two different languages; Spanish and Russian, from June, 14 to July, 15 2018 have been analyzed. The study begins within the methodological proposal for the analysis of the journalistic metaphor based on pragmatic (Grice 1996Grice, H. (1996). Logic and conversation. In A. Martinich (Ed.), The Philosophy of Language (pp. 156-176). Oxford University Press. ; Teruel 1995Teruel, E. (1995). Anàlisi pragmática de la metáfora periodística. The presence of two types of metaphors has been assumed: cultural metaphor which are typical for one culture and one language, and universal metaphors shares in both cases. The study is carried out in a comparative approach in synchronic perspective, allowing us to contrast the associations in two languages from different linguistic families to establish similarities and differences.
