The use of anglicisms in Facebook and Twitter: A study on their influence in the Spanish society and academic organs

ABSTRACT

The increase in the use of social networks has totally impacted social systems of communication such as language. In the case of the Spanish language, one of the effects we find is the massive emergence of English words and expressions. Due to the popularity of social networks such as Facebook or Twitter, these anglicisms gain more and more space in the universe of Spanish speakers. Therefore, the aim of the present investigation is to verify which are the most frequent anglicisms in these social networks, by means of a corpus of 1721 messages, and to observe if they have a large enough impact on society to be included in academic corpora and dictionaries such as DLE and CORPES XXI of RAE and ASALE. Within this social context, it was interesting to analyze the age and gender ranges where these anglicisms are most commonly used. Based on this premise, we observed in the results the occurrence of many anglicisms in social networks, mostly used by young people, but with low representation in academic dictionaries, mainly due to the recent emergence of these words.
