Scientific Field, Recognition and Professional Motivation in Post-Graduate Programs in Southern Brazil

ABSTRACT

This article presents research results on the scientific profession. From a framework that establishes a dialogue between the sociology of science and of professions, it investigates aspects of scientific knowledge production, as well as institutional and normative aspects that support it. Specifically, we discuss the relationships between positions in the scientific field, the perception of researchers about the recognition of their activity and their professional motivations. Depending on the perception of recognition of the activity in different positions held by researchers, they tend to adhere to purer or more utilitarian conceptions of science. For this, we analyzed 398 answers to a questionnaire of accredited researchers in postgraduate programs located in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Results point to a scientific field poorly recognized, with dispositions oriented towards utilitarian goals and a greater rationalization of the field around teaching and training ideals.
