Active packaging for foods

Traditionally, food packaging systems have been designed to protect the product, one of their main requirements being not to interact with the packaged food; thus, they function as an inert barrier between the food and the environment. On the other hand, active packaging systems have been developed to interact desirably with the product, increasing or checking its shelf life. This review presents active packaging definition, main functions and applications.
