Evaluation of the organization and practices of delivery and birth care in three hospitals in Santa Catarina, Brazil

We evaluated hospital care at delivery and birth, analyzing management and care aspects from women’s admission to postpartum. Evaluative research was conducted on management and delivery and birth care practices, from November 2019 to February 2020, in the three best hospitals in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, according to a national evaluation of delivery and birth care good practices. Data collection involved documental analysis, observation, and interviews with management and assistance professionals and puerperal women. In total, 30 indicators were analyzed, organized into an analysis and assessment matrix, grouped within the Political-Organizational and Tactical-Operational dimensions. Assessment was guided by the comparison between the observed score and the maximum score expected in each component of the evaluation matrix. Delivery and birth care was partially satisfactory in hospitals 2 and 3 and unsatisfactory in hospital 1. The Political-Organizational dimension was classified as unsatisfactory and the Tactical-Operational partly satisfactory in the three hospitals. No hospital obtained a satisfactory evaluation in more than 40% of our indicators. The analyzed hospitals have yet been unable to consolidate changes in their care model from the perspective of humanized care, guided by scientific evidence and rights.
