This article presents a reflection on the relationship between health, environment and development the in the context of Public Health, as well as the possibilities of implementation of public policies in Brazil related to this broad thematic. The article uses as reference a critical evaluation of the Brazilian experience with the Pan-American Conference of Health and Environment in the Context of Sustainable Development (COPASAD). This experience reflects the magnitude, complexity and urgency of environmental questions to the public health field, reinforcing aspects of epistemological and methodological nature, such as the discussions about the new paradigms of science, interdisciplinary and intersectorial actions. On the other hand, the article verifies the precariousness of the Brazilian society and government in all levels and sectors, including the health sector, to give priority and implement integrated policies and actions.
