Health, environment, and economic development in the Amazon

This article analyzes the transformation of the epidemiological profile in an Amazonian population group consisting of workers recruited by the mining company Mineração Rio do Norte S.A. (MRN) in Porto Trombetas in the municipality of Oriximiná, Pará State, Brazil. Determination of the health/disease process developed according to particular conditions of social reproduction in the mining project, quite different from those of the population groups associated with the region’s traditional socioeconomic development. The categories most directly involved were the social organization of space and social policy vis-à-vis MRN, the Porto Trombetas population and the country, and the other population categories.
