CRIPTOCOCOSIS IN CATS

SUMMARY Cryptococosis is a micotic disease caused by a yeast known as Cryptococcus neoformans, which has a worldwide distribution. The etiologic agent has been isolated from different materials, included fruits, soil, and bird feces, specially pigeons feces. Crypfcococcus neoformans is normally saprophytic, but in some circumstances can produce disease in man and other domestic and wild animals. In cats this yeast cause infection in the lungs, central nervous system, facial regions and also occur as a generalized disease. Cryptococosis in cats appears to be clinically similar to other diseases. Due to this fact the disease needs to be rapidly and precisely diagnosed so the clinician can use the most adequated treatment.
