BACTERIAL AND VIRAL ISOLATIONS FROM FISHES FROM THE WATER OF SANTA MARIA COUNTY AND SURROUNDINGS

In the present work bacteria and virus were isolated from fishes and compared with those described in the literature as causing infectious diseases. One hundred and sixty fishes were collected during four seasons from rivers, dams and ponds. Ali the fishes were from apparently normal populations. Kidney samples and external or internal lesions when present were submitted for bacteria isolation and totalized 232. Twenty-one different bacteria were isolated and identified. Eleven of those are described as pathogenic for fishes: Aeromonas hydrophila, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Edwardsiella tarda, Flavobacterium spp., Pseudomonas spp., Vibrio spp., Pasteurella spp.. Micrococcus spp., Corynebacterium spp., Acinetobacter spp., and Streptococcus spp.. Two hundred and fifty-five materials were used for virological examination mainly liver, spleen and gonad. The samples were passed in the epitelioma Papillosum of Carpa (EPC) cell line. Two samples showed cytophatic effect after inoculation in the cell system. The seventh passage that still had cytophatic effect were prepared for electron microscopy examination. Viral particles with approximately 50nm were observed in the cytoplasm of the cell.
