PERFORMANCE OF STEERS FINISHED WITH DIETS CONTAINING SUGAR CANE OR CORN SILAGE

SUMMARY The experiment included two treatments: T1 - Concentrate plus sugar cane plus urea, and T2 - Concentrate plus corn silage. Both treatments received the same amount of the same concentrate. Urea was added to T1 diet to maintain both diets with the same level of nitrogen (12% of crude protein). Twelve Charolais steers with 2.5 years of age were used. Initial weight of the steers was 297.5kg, and they were removed from the experiment when their average weight reached 420kg. Average daily gain was 1.12 and 1.46kg for T1 and T2 (P<0.0016), respectively. Daily dry matter consumption was 9.96 and 9.97kg (P>0.5683), feed conversion was 8.65 and 6.90 (P<0.0608), for T1 and T2, respectively. It took 110 and 88 days for steers to reach final weight in T1 and T2, respectively. Steers fed corn silage had a better overall performance.
